Sealing the Future: HEROSE’s High-Pressure Valves Paving the Way for Hydrogen Mobility

Since its founding in 1873, HEROSE has been at the forefront of innovation in valve technology. Over the decades, the company has expanded its expertise in cryogenic and industrial valves, providing high-quality solutions for technical gases, vapours, and liquids. Today, HEROSE is taking a significant step forward by focusing on hydrogen technology, ensuring its products meet the highest safety and performance standards in the evolving energy landscape.

“Hydrogen is a game-changer in the energy transition, and we are committed to delivering the best solutions for this industry,” says Jana Burmeister, Marketing Manager at HEROSE.

Expanding the Boundaries of High-Pressure Valve Technology

HEROSE has recently made a breakthrough in hydrogen safety valve technology with the development of its high-pressure safety valve designed for hydrogen fueling stations. Launched at the end of last year, this valve can handle pressures up to 1200 bars, a substantial increase from its previous limit of 550 bars. This innovation directly supports the growing hydrogen mobility sector, where fueling stations require high-pressure solutions to efficiently store and dispense hydrogen at 700 bars, the standard for fuel cell vehicles.

“Developing a safety valve that can withstand such extreme pressure was a major engineering challenge, but one that we were eager to tackle. This product reflects our commitment to pushing the boundaries of what is possible in hydrogen safety technology,” explains Burmeister.

Additionally, HEROSE is working on a high-pressure globe valve designed specifically for hydrogen transportation. With the increased need for gas transportation infrastructure, particularly in Europe, this valve addresses the requirements for moving hydrogen safely and efficiently over long distances. Unlike the stationary safety valve used in fueling stations, the globe valve is used in mobile applications, such as hydrogen trailers transporting gas from production sites to fueling stations and industrial applications.

“Safety and reliability are the cornerstones of our hydrogen product development. The demand for high-pressure solutions is growing, and we are ensuring that our products meet these critical industry needs,” adds Burmeister.

Ensuring Safety and Reliability in Hydrogen Applications

Safety is paramount in hydrogen applications due to the gas’s tendency to leak and its highly flammable nature. HEROSE has responded to these challenges by developing innovative sealing technologies to minimise leakage. Achieving a zero-leakage standard at 1200 bars required significant R&D efforts, leading to the creation of a new testing infrastructure within the company. These test stands allow HEROSE to conduct stringent quality checks, ensuring all high-pressure valves meet industry safety regulations.

Materials also play a critical role in hydrogen applications. Hydrogen embrittlement is a major concern for metallic components, and HEROSE has proactively increased the nickel content in its materials to enhance resistance to this effect. The company continuously evaluates and upgrades its materials across various product categories, including shut-off valves, filters, check valves, and safety valves, ensuring compatibility with hydrogen applications.

“We leave no stone unturned when it comes to quality assurance,” says Burmeister. “Every valve that leaves our facility has been meticulously tested and verified to guarantee safety and durability.”

Hydrogen-Ready Valve Portfolio: A Step Towards the Future

HEROSE is progressively adapting its entire valve portfolio to be “hydrogen ready.” This involves reassessing materials, designs, and performance characteristics to ensure that each valve is optimised for hydrogen applications. The company’s hydrogen-focused developments align with broader industry trends, as hydrogen infrastructure expands worldwide.

Feedback from customers has been overwhelmingly positive. Many clients appreciate HEROSE’s proactive approach in offering hydrogen-compatible solutions tailored to the needs of industrial gas transportation, storage, and distribution. The company remains committed to collaborating with customers, understanding their specific applications, and delivering high-quality, customised valve solutions.

“Hydrogen applications require a different level of attention to detail. The safety and efficiency of our products are always our highest priority, and we work closely with customers to ensure they get the best solutions for their needs,” notes Burmeister.

Navigating a Competitive Landscape

While HEROSE remains a dominant force in the European market, competition from lower-cost manufacturers, particularly in Asia, is increasing. However, HEROSE differentiates itself by maintaining uncompromising quality standards, leveraging in-house expertise, and investing in R&D to develop durable, high-performance valves. The company has established itself as a trusted provider in hydrogen applications by ensuring that its products meet stringent safety and reliability criteria.

“Our reputation is built on trust and reliability. Customers know that when they choose HEROSE, they are investing in long-term safety and performance,” says Burmeister.

Future Outlook: Strengthening Innovation and Sustainability

HEROSE continues to push the boundaries of valve technology, particularly in the hydrogen sector. Looking ahead, the company plans to strengthen its global engineering capabilities, leveraging digitalisation to enhance process efficiency and customer offerings. As the energy industry transitions towards sustainable solutions, HEROSE remains at the forefront, contributing essential technologies for hydrogen mobility, industrial gas transportation, and emerging energy markets.

In addition to developing high-pressure valves, HEROSE is also ensuring that all its products remain sustainable. “Sustainability is not just a buzzword for us; it’s a fundamental principle that guides our operations,” says Burmeister. “We are ISO 14001 certified, and our products are designed for long service life, repairability, and recyclability.”

The company’s vision is clear: to provide world-class valve solutions that drive the hydrogen economy forward, ensuring safety, reliability, and innovation at every step. As hydrogen adoption accelerates, HEROSE stands ready to meet the industry’s evolving needs with its state-of-the-art, hydrogen-ready valve portfolio.

“Innovation, quality, and sustainability will continue to be our driving forces as we shape the future of hydrogen technology,” concludes Burmeister. •

"Advancing hydrogen mobility requires high-pressure valves that ensure safety and reliability. HEROSE’s innovative solutions help overcome challenges like leakage and embrittlement, paving the way for a sustainable hydrogen future."
